- Title: 361 AT Turks attack Kurdish rally
- Date: 26th June 2020
- Description:Right-wing group Turkish ultranationalists attack Kurdish rallies in Vienna Around 450 Kurds and left-wing groups gathered on Saturday in the 10th district of Vienna at the Columbus square for demonstration and then marched towards the Turkish embassy. The protesters asked to release all political prisoners in Turkey. Police has sent in more troops, as in the last days Kurdish protests were disturbed by right-wing nationalist Turkish groups. Young men with Turkish background showed the “wolf salute”, a symbol for the right-wing group “Grey wolves”. This symbol of the right-wing group is forbidden in Austria. On Friday, provocateurs, probably members of "Gray Wolves", disturbed a demonstration by Kurdish activists and left-wing Turk groups. Pyrotechnic items, bottles and other objects were thrown at protesters. At least one police officer was injured. Five firefighters suffered tinnitus from the bang of firecrackers that exploded next to a group of officers. A policeman was hit on the shoulder by a bottle and also slightly injured. Police arrested several people. Police spokesperson Patrick Mayerhofer said 20 people have been fined for the wolf salute, and the police is acting consequently. They will now show more presence at hot spots. Expert for political science and extremism Thomas Schmidinger sees the conflict as transnational because aspects of the origin countries mix with local problems such as the economic situation of migrants, experience of discrimination and no perspective. Austrian authorities have announced a search for the masterminds. Police will work with community groups to de-escalate the conflict. The Turkish ambassador in Austria, Ozan Ceyhun, is called in by the Austrian Foreign Ministry on Monday.
