- Title: 310 AT COVID-19 Bars reopen reax
- Date: 22nd May 2020
- Description:Bars and coffee shops draw different results after a week of opening amid easing of restrictions Since Friday, 15 May, Austrian restaurants, bars and coffee shops have been allowed to reopen their doors to guests in compliance with certain rules. Guests have to wear face masks when they enter the restaurant or the coffee shop, but while sitting at the table they can remove the mask. Only four adults plus children are allowed to sit at one table. There must be a minimum distance between the tables. Some bars even occupy tables with shop window dummies in order to illustrate which tables are free for guests to use. The staff has to wear face masks all the time. At 23.00 local time,at the latest, gastronomy has to close. But some of the restaurants and bars have already closed again, because there are not enough clients, especially in large cities and tourist favourite places. Tourism is missing, as is cultural activity. In addition, the lunchtime business is missing, because many still work from home. Many bars and coffee shops hope that at least their regular guests come. Coffee shop “Café Museum” closed its doors after four days of work. Its owner Berndt Querfeld said that they "expected 50% less sales, but the fact that it was 90% less sales". It is not just about tourists, but also many local regulars who do not dare to leave the house or do home office and are simply not in the city. I have the impression that it is like a ski resort in the pre-season where there is no snow. We expected 50% less sales, but the fact that it was 90% less sales was a bad awakening for us and our employees. You have to pull the emergency brake because burning money is not possible in the current situation.” - VS Pub “Das Kolin” terrace with only a few guests sitting, waitress wearing face mask serving drinks to guests on terrace - VS Shop window dummies sitting at tables occupying seats to show that those seats may not be used by guests for keeping the minimum distance between the tables - PAN LEFT/RIGHT Pictures showing pub staff with and without masks / Shop window dummies sitting at tables - VS Table and pictures showing pub staff with and without masks, deer antlers hanging on the wall with colorful face masks - SOUNDBITE (German) Dieter Elsler, innkeeper of “Das Kolin”: “The expectations and anticipation were huge, not only for me, but also for all of my employees who were finally allowed to work again. But unfortunately the conclusion is very, very sobering and very, very disappointing. This week, we did 60% less business compared to last year. And that is definitely a number with which we will not be open for a long time, but rather have to take a step back if it should stay that way.” - VS Exterior of coffee shop “Café Espresso", innkeeper of coffee shop wearing mask serving a few people sitting on coffee shop terrace - VS Interior of coffee shop “Café Espresso”, innkeeper wearing mask preparing coffee for guests - SOUNDBITE (German) Julia Zerzer-Novak, innkeeper of coffee shop "Café Espresso": “It is quieter than we are used to. People are restrained, many still work at home, which means that they don't go out for lunch or breakfast. But actually things started well with us because we have incredibly great regular guests, whom I would also like to thank very much for the fact that they are all back. We also had a lot of tourists as guests on weekends. The number of tourists has risen sharply in recent years. But they are not there now.” - VS Shop window dummies sitting at tables occupying seats to show that those seats may not be used by guests for keeping the minimum distance between the tables - VS Funny shop window dummies: one wearing face mask and holding cigarette, one dressed as Krampus, helper to St. Nicolas - C/U Pieces of cake in vitrine
