- Date: 13th May 2020
- Description:Vouchers of up to 50 Euros are given to people living in Vienna for restaurants visits to boost the economy The mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig announced a voucher of 25 to 50 Euros will be given to each household to spend in a restaurant or in a café. A single household will get 25 Euros, households with more persons get 50 Euros to spend from June to September in the restaurants, pubs and cafes located in Vienna. People can buy food or non-alcoholic drinks with the voucher. The Mayor and the chamber of commerce say this initiative should help the gastronomy and will cost around 40 Million Euros. There are around 6000 restaurants and pubs, and 3000 cafes are in Vienna with around 60.000 employees. The gastronomy is hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. The mayor says he wants to convince the Viennese people to visit their local restaurants, pubs and cafes. The owner and tenant of the restaurants, bars and cafes expect losses of up to 50 percent, as fewer people will get a seat in their premises due to the new measures. And there are no tourists in Vienna at the moment, also they do not know if people will be willing to spend their money in restaurants or bars, as a record number of people are unemployed due to the crisis.
