- Date: 14th April 2020
- Description:Austrian DIY and gardening enjoy successful reopening amid ease of coronavirus lockdown The withdrawal of measures for individuals from Tuesday is accompanied by strict conditions. At this moment only shops with a sales area of less than 400 square meters are being considered. DIY and garden centers are not bind by the square meter limit, as well as building material traders, metal and wood dealers, car and bicycle repair shops, car washes and pawnshops. To all of them the use of masks is compulsory - also for the staff, but the shops do not have to provide masks for the customers. Safety distance of at least one meter and 20 square meters of space per customer must be available. The maximum opening hours are between 7:40 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Supermarkets, pharmacies and tobacconists are of course open, but shopping centres, restaurants and hotels will remain closed, as well as service providers such as hairdressers and manicure salons. Retailers who let too many customers into the restaurant have to pay up to 3,600 euros. Large dealers who are not covered by the regulation and open early can be fined up to 30,000 euros. Shops which are now allowed to open must ensure that there is only one customer per 20 square meters. In addition, there is a general obligation to wear a mask. As of Tuesday this applies to all shops for sellers and customers. The shops do not have to provide protective masks. According to the government, the goal now is to save the economy, save lives. Therefore, the schools will definitely remain closed at mid or late May and there will be in this regard, no plan at all, except that the final exams will take place.
