- Title: 217 AT COVID-19 Trade bans relaxed
- Date: 9th April 2020
- Description:Some Austrian shops will reopen on April 14, as trade restrictions relaxed on small businesses From April 14th, business will resume in Austria, starting with small shops comprising a sales area under 400 square meters. Bigger shops and shopping centers remain closed (expected until May 2nd). As an exception, hardware stores and garden centers may also open from April 14th. So far, people could also buy flowers, garden furniture, electronic devices or clothing in the supermarket while the specialist trade was closed. This has led to resentment in the specialist trade - especially with regard to the Easter business. For reasons of solidarity with specialist retailers, some food chains have therefore agreed to sell only food and no more non-food products as of today, Holy Saturday. However, this restriction will probably only apply today, because from Tuesday after Easter (April 14th) the trade restrictions will be gradually released: the first non-food-shops can open again - after four weeks, namely smaller shops with less than 400 square meters of sales area, but with restrictions: only one customer is allowed per 20 square meters. Certain larger shops are also allowed to open again on Tuesday (April 14th), namely the hardware stores and garden centers, no matter how large the sales area is. The hardware stores and garden centers are preparing for the reopening these days and are making their shops as safe as possible to minimize the risk of infection for customers and employees. All other larger stores and shopping centers remain closed. They may then reopen from May 2nd probably. If opened early, they can face a fine of up to 30,000 euros. So far, there have been more than 18,000 complaints in Austria due to violations of the Corona Regulation, i.e. failure to comply with the exit restrictions. As of today, Saturday, the police have not only been able to issue reports, but also to issue organ mandates, i.e. collect fines directly. Anyone who does not keep the minimum distance or does not wear a face mask in the supermarket must pay a fine of 25 euros - for all other violations there is a risk of 50 euros. This ministerial decree has been in effect since midnight. However, since there are still some legal questions that lawyers will clarify about the Easter holidays, the police will only start to collect fines as of Tuesday. In addition, the duty to wear a protective mask will be expanded from next Tuesday, April 14th: People will then have to wear a mouth-nose protection not only in shops but also on public transport. Shops smaller than 400 square meters are allowed to open, all above not. We do have nearly 13,000 square meters sales area where customers could of course branch out much better and much quicker and much spaciously than in a 400 square meters store. Therefore I do not really understand this square meters restriction.” VS closed sales area inside shopping center Steffl C/U luxury shoes and hand bags VS closed sales area inside shopping center Steffl
