We just never expected to get five to get eight nominations, thats a really big number. Bruce Im one of the, the many people in Hollywood who get up every year at 5:30 in the morning and cant wait to see the Oscar Nominations so when a year does roll around when youre lucky enough to actually be one of the people that may get an Oscar Nomination its incredibly exciting. 01:02:26 - Sound Bite: Dan Jinks/ Bruce Cohen Dan Weve been Gus Van Sant fans for so many years now and we would call his agency and say hey can we have a meeting with Gus, we sent him projects and never heard anything and we got this script on a Monday night and on Wednesday we were sitting in a room with Gus and it was like a dream come true for us. He is one of the great filmmakers, hes so smart and hes incredibly articulate but hes not verbose, he chooses his words very carefully but everybody listens to what he says and hes all about authenticity and I think that shows up in Milk. So many people have said that Milk really feels like it brought them back to the 70s in such a real way and thats really a tribute to Gus Van Sant. 01:03:12 - Sound Bite: Dan Jinks/ Bruce Cohen Bruce Well what, perseverance you definitely need, and patience cause its always very tough to get started but its all about material, I mean we really believe you know if you can get your hands on a beautiful screenplay youre going to have a much better chance getting that into a movie. And if if the material isnt that good even if you think its your shot, you might want to wait and really work hard to find something that you really believe can be an amazing film some day. Dan The one thing I would add to that is if youre 22, 23 years old and you decide Im going to produce a 30/40/50 million dollar movie its like being a CEO of a company without really understanding how a company really works. Yeah I uh it was an amazing experience actually it was uh they had taken over this little town in Illinois, Woodstock Illinois, they shot the whole thing on location and it was summer time, but in the movie its obviously supposed to be winter. So in the middle of summer theres this town covered in fake snow, everybodys walking around with coats on, it was very serial. But yeah that would be my first experience and Harold Ramous is such a nice man, he was really fun to work with and uh yeah that was my first one. 01:12:15 - Sound Bite: Michael Shannon Hmm, well you just have to be patient, Ive been doing this 19 years, 19 years and theres people who have been doing it a lot longer. I had no idea it gets aired on television the morning of the announcements, I did have a heads up that it was that morning that the announcements would be made, a good friend called me. I was still in bed when the call came, it was delightful. 01:16:28 - Sound Bite: Melissa Leo It was probably about 28 years ago Roger Corman was producing a film that was originally called cookie that I was told was a independent docu-drama about street prostitution. I didnt know who Roger Corman was at the time and then when we shot Cookie, I mean Street Walkin as it became called, I learned that was the first thing I ever shot in New York City. 01:17:07 - Sound Bite: Melissa Leo Yeah look at the names of the people involved in it and know as much as you can about it, it will inform you about the project, thats just cause of the story I just told. And then when I saw it and I saw just the first few frames and I saw what Darren, just the impact of the opening, I was really proud of Darren. 01:23:46 - Sound Bite: Marisa Tomei Uhm how do you know when you have a good director? (talks) No. 01:24:24 - Sound Bite: Danny Boyle Oh for lots of reasons, obviously for sheer, Im a fan of directors in a way that maybe these guys arent because I am a director so Im a big fan of directors. Just to sit on a stage with David Fincher, Ron Howard, Gus Van Sant, Chris Nolan, people like that this morning, was extraordinary. The other thing in the nomination they include your team which is unique, nobody else does. And Rodge here, Rodger Cherry was my first Assistant Director and he was extraordinary in organizing the street scenes especially but also introducing me and teaching me how to film in Mumbai really. And to see him and his team as part of the nomination tonight is a wonderful honor and uh Fox has been wonderful to bring him here so he can share in a bit of glamour before he goes back to his day job and gets on with the tough stuff, its lovely. 01:25:22 - Sound Bite: Danny Boyle Its, the biggest challenge of all is picking the right people, always. You know you pick the composer, this is Aroa our composer. You pick your team to work with, thats the biggest skill of all actually and 95% of it is that skill really and some of its based on experience and some of its based on intuition, instinct about people. And when youre on a roll, when you feel really good about a story or the place that your working you tend to make good decisions and a good decision always follows another good decision you know they tend to roll like that and you pick up speed in a film and I could feel that happening and then its up to you to ruin it as a Director cause you can always do that as well you know thats always a possibility. But we look like weve made a decent job of the film and its wonderful the reception weve had throughout America from the media, from critics from film festivals but most of all word of mouth really amongst people, you can feel it ordinary people who have been to see the movie against all the odds because its not the kind of film that they would normally go to see I think but theyve been helped by all those other people to go and see it and then they spread the word to each other and were really delighted about that, absolutely delighted you know. 01:26:36 - Sound Bite: Danny Boyle Well actually I, whenever I get asked that question I think of a couple of really small films, you know which are Frozen River, its an extraordinary film made with very little money. A weird Swedish film called Let the Right One In a vampire film like youve never seen before. But theres other films like some of which are nominated, some of which are not, Waltz with Bashir, The Wrestler, these small films that are made against the odds you know theres been a big struggle to make them you can feel that in them and yet theyve been extraordinary moments for me uh watching them last year.
