- Summary: Tom McGrath & Eric Darnell: Madagascar Escape 2 Africa Tom McGrath & Eric Darnell Cam C
- Description:00:16:58 - Sound Bite: Tom McGrath / Eric Darnell the nuances of the characters make it work Darnell The way we kinda, it comes out of, you know for Julian for example, Sashas performance of him you know and even the way hell gesture his hands when we record him because what we do is we have lipstick camera, we record them, as well as get their vocal performance, the animators have something to base their performance off of so and Sashas great, they all get really physical behind the mic, but even the way he dances and even singing the song Private Dancer and doing his moves you know the animators have captured and put into the 00:17:36 - Sound Bite: Tom McGrath / Eric Darnell theres a lot of performance from the actors McGrath Right right and well go in with our script but I mean these guys are all great comedians and improvers, is that that right? Improvisers? Improvisationalas? Darnell Improvisationalizers. McGrath Yes improvisationalizers, and uh so we want that, and so they helped create who these characters are and we just sort of you know put them in front of the mic and stepped back and let them do the great stuff that they do so we just feel so lucky sitting there you know in New York City recording somebody you know its like we all know those plays are going on there in Broadway but you know we got the best seat in the house. 00:18:23 - Sound Bite: Tom McGrath / Eric Darnell is it a prequel? Darnell No we wanted it to be its own story in a way and we didnt want it to have to, in way we kind of said well maybe if you didnt see the first one youd still understand the story so thats what we set out to do and um hopefully you know it plays on its own. 00:18:48 - Sound Bite: Tom McGrath / Eric Darnell McGrath Yeah and getting to know them in the first movie you know and taking them on, it was maybe like a simpler story, still fun and funny, but now that we know these characters so well we knew we could go to some deeper places with them and thats what we tried to do with this film. Darnell We thought that we could do better with this one and that was our goal. 00:19:23 - Sound Bite: Tom McGrath / Eric Darnell are actors forthcoming when asked to do these projects Darnell Yeah you know and its fun to pitch a story or characters, for example Alec Baldwin you know we approached him with a different character, a hunter actually a human, and that character actually fell out of the film but we loved Alec playing a villain and along came this rival lion Makunga and we pitched it to Alec and immediately he had ideas for his character. (talks) Just in how he would act and he thought himself, part of it didnt make it in the movie but you know how hed get on the phone and like hed be kind of think hes a ladies man and all the female lions would just you know dismiss him and stuff like that so it was really funny and so he got right into it right away and we just feel really fortunate that they say yes. 00:20:26 - Sound Bite: Tom McGrath / Eric Darnell McGrath Yeah and a lot of it I mean is just the way the animators can take those mannerisms that he does, its just so unique to him, and put it into the character you know and so much of what we think of people and recognize about people is their mannerisms and their physicality, not even sometimes the actual features in their face, so all these characters people say you know, wow they look just like the actors in way, but its really just the talent of the animators pulling from the live action stuff.
