- Title: Models Close Up
- Date: 16th September 1998
- Summary: A series on the world of modelling directed by David Bailey and produced by Liz Warner. Following the process from talent scouting through model schools to the supermodel industry, the films include some of the world's best known models, agents and photographers.
- Description:Bailey opens the series of documentaries with his views on being a photographer and working with 'supermodels'. He gives us his opinion on the top girls i.e. Cindy, Naomi, Christy and Kate. In the interviews, we find out the story behind how each model started out - how Kate Moss was discovered at JFK by Sarah Doukas, how Kate Elson was transformed to a model and Jean Shrimpton tells of her first encounter on set with Bailey. There is footage from the Lucy Clayton school which was the first and only modelling school in the UK for many years. We then go backstage at Model Search America in the United States - a huge competition attended by scouts for anyone who wants to apply. The supermodels give their opinion on whether agents prey on innocent girls. Are the 15 year old girls entering the market too young to make good business decisions? Agent Gerald Marie and David Bailey compare notes on how many women they've slept with. There is fly on the wall footage from a scouting mission by Elite South African townships. Finally Bailey asks models whether they would like their daughters to become models.
