- Title: Wine (What's In Your Wine?)
- Date: 1st January 1970
- Description:Wine investigates how consumers are being misled and ripped off by big retailers and producers in the wine industry. Wine is traditionally seen as a natural, healthy product but much of what we now drink is chemically enhanced, sweetened and flavoured. Even premier brands like champagne need large amounts of added sugar to make them palatable. Most wines contain sulphites,a chemical preservative,at concentrations up to 100 per cent more than the level recommended by the World Health Organisation as a recommended daily intake. Some wine makers are taking dangerous risks with public health when making their mass produced wine. In April this year,Italian Police seized 70 million liters of wine, which are alleged to have contained dangerous substances like acid, manure and fertilizers. This was not just one bad company; 12 different Italian wine producers are implicated. One of the companies has a history of bad practice, they produced wine which contained excessive levels of methanol in 1986,in which 26 consumers died and many others were left blinded. Wine speaks to the journalists who broke the story and ask the investigating authorities whether they are doing enough to protect the consumer. Wine also exposes the lack of proper testing or quality control in the wine industry as well as SupermarketÌ¢‰â‰ã¢s cheap tricks to squeeze money from the consumer.
