- Title: Robochick And The Bionic Boy
- Date: 1st January 1970
- Description:This film explores recent advances in bionics through two personal stories. Cheri Robertson, from St Louis Missouri, was blinded in a car crash in 1989 when she was 19. In 2003,she volunteered to undergo an experimental surgical procedure to implant an artificial vision system in her brain. Pioneered by scientist William Dobelle, this system works by translating the signal from a video camera on Cheri's glasses into electrical impulses that stimulate her brain, helping her to see dots of light. But when Dobelle died in 2006,Cheri was left waiting for an upgrade to her system, and she now doesn't know if and when her system will fulfill its potential and give her back her sight. 18-year-old Evan Reynolds, from Surrey, lost his arm in a car accident, and is now being fitted with an extraordinary new type of bionic hand that has five articulating fingers - the first time this has been possible. We follow Evan as his hand is fitted and he learns to use it,and we find out how losing his arm at such a young age has affected him.
