Summary:Prog 2: looks at how the optimism of the early 1970s failed to last the decade. The landmark UK Cancer Act of 1971 pledged an extra $100 million to cancer research. But politicians' talk of finding a cure for cancer within 5 yrs was never echoed by the doctors and researchers actually researching the disease. It did raise the expectations of individual cancer patients who thought that something could be done to reverse their decline.
