- Title: Unreported World Series 2002 - El Salvador: Killing to Belong
- Date: 20th December 2002
- Summary: During El Salvador's war, half a million refugees fled to Los Angeles. While their parents worked, Salvadoran children joined gangs, mainly the 18th Street and Mara Salvatrucha gangs. When war ended in 1992, the United States began deporting Salvadoran-born gang members back to their `home'. After years away, impoverished El Salvador felt like a foreign country to them. So the deportees imported the culture they knew, setting up branches of the 18th Street and MS gangs, bitter rivals whose members kill each other for honour, territory and control of the crack market, turning El Salvador into a battlefield where ordinary people get caught in the crossfire. Today there are up to 50,000 Salvadoran `homies' who wouldn't look out of place in the United States.
