HRN-2656 In: 11.28.04 Out: 11.28.41 Sound Bite: Derek Luke & Michael Ealy & Laz Alonso & Omar Benson Miller Ealy I think Miracle at St. Anna is is really a story about the forgotten element of Black history. A lot of us dont know or didnt learn in school that black soldiers fought in WWII, we just didnt know. And so you know the importance of telling this story is to create an awareness that we were there, we did fight, and we did fight for our country and some of us were patriotic about it and some of us werent but we were there and we died. (talks) Luke Nah nah amen brother he was hitting it. 11:28:50 - A02 HRN-2656 In: 11.28.50 Out: 11.29.24 Sound Bite: Derek Luke & Michael Ealy & Laz Alonso & Omar Benson Miller Laz I had no idea of the physiological aspect of the war you know what I mean, these guys werent just fighting a battle overseas but they were also fighting a battle back at home and they had this ? being pumped uh constantly reminding him what goes on at home while theyre on the battle field, supposedly going after the enemy and uhm you know its just something that really lets you know how mentally strong they must have been to be able to inspite of whats going on back at home, still defend it with pride. 11:29:37 - A03. HRN-2656 In: 11.29.37 Out: 11.30.22 Sound Bite: Derek Luke & Michael Ealy & Laz Alonso & Omar Benson Miller Luke we got a lot of information when were uh you know during boot camp and uh you know I dont know about these guys but I have relatives that fought in the war and they gave me a depiction of how it was for them so I imagine how it was for the guys in WWII you know and when we were at boot camp you know we got this uh like I said like this draft letter and hey Im an actor and you get up there and it says no cell phones, no this no that and just forced you and all the guys to bond and thats what they had at that time, they had each other. HRN-2656 In: 11.30.21 Out: 11.32.27 Sound Bite Whats it like to work with Spike Omar Benson Miller Um I think that this particular story um the book Miracle at St. Anne and the film Miracle at St. Anne I think that it was if this is possible bigger than Spike Lee and I think that all of us felt honored that Spike chose us to be in the film, for each and every character to represent what each character represents but I also think that, Michael said it earlier is that it is very fitting that the most important filmmaker in African American History was someone to tell was thee person to tell this story which is a hugely important story on a historical, moral, political, even economic level. (talking) Michael Ealy You know what though I can honestly say that you know and I think I can speak on behalf of all of us in this moment, I dont think we ever felt like Spike was a fish out of water in Italy, like the movie never seemed too big for him he was still like, get the crane, lets go, I mean he was still like you would have thought he was shooting a movie in New York he didnt he wasnt overwhelmed by it so that gave us a sense of confidence in him that just you know allowed us to trust him in certain ways. Laz Alonso- Also you look at movies that Spike has done in the past I mean hes always been able to capture the essence of different cultures and different cultural differences and show their differences but also show how theyre really all the same, and I think you know outside of the language barrier that he had to overcome with an Italian crew and working with German actors and Italian actors uh you know he really wasnt I couldnt imagine anybody who could tell a multi-cultural story better than Spike. Because hes been doing it his whole career.
