HRN-2640 Cam C In: 03.42.54 Out: 03.43.38 Sound Bite: Clark Gregg, Chuck Palahniuk does it ever cross Greggs mind that John Huston was Anjelicas father Gregg Oh yeah, absolutely. At a certain point youre forced to kind of focus on the task at hand but its all you can think of you know this is the person who you know from Prizzis Honor or um The Grifters, all these great performances that Ive loved, and you know if you buy too deeply into that its betraying her because youre not going to kind of settle in and do your job and my job is to kind of show up for her as if you know not that I was John Huston but you know shes expecting to do a directors job and not kind of be fawning, and sometimes a directors job is to be more than just respectful but to also kind of be strong in terms of giving opportunities and new ways to look at the scene. 03:43:54 - A02. HRN-2640 Cam C In: 03.43.54 Out: 03.45.15 Sound Bite: Clark Gregg, Chuck Palahniuk what was that first meeting with Huston like Gregg Well I didnt. Everythings new to you when youre a first time director. I dont know, Ive been on the other side of those meetings sometimes. Ive never been Anjelica Huston sitting down there with a director. So usually Im going, You gotta use me. Um for me I knew she was a little wary about the script as everyone had been and yet um I felt like she was perfect. At a certain level I felt like I could convince her and so when she sat down, she took one look at me and she kind of, her eyes welled up with tears within seven seconds of sitting down, and I said, Oh God, Ive really blown this, and I dont even know how. And then she told me that her mother had passed away when she was young and she was raised by a wonderful Irish nanny and that I looked just like her and I thought, okay, I hope this was a nice nanny and not a mean nanny, but it turned out to be this tremendously loving wonderful woman who I looked just like, and um any you know hurt feelings I might have about looking like somebodys old nanny, immediately ? because it seemed like it was opening the door to her being interested. So it turned out the womans last name was Shine, which was my mothers maiden name, so we had our goosebumps and we started talking about the script and she was in. 03:45:24 - A03. HRN-2640 Cam C In: 03.45.24 Out: 03.46.24 Sound Bite: Clark Gregg, Chuck Palahniuk where did this come from? Palahniuk You know, I uh, the summer that Fight Club came out was such a fantastically big time for me, and it was the same summer that my father was killed and I had to keep driving back to help the police identify this hideously burned body with dental records, and at one point I sort of fantasizing on long drives of pulling over at the side of the road and I got character who would lie down in the headlights of his car late at night and wait for someone to put 2 fingers against his neck and sort of coax him back to his life and say, Youre gonna be okay, everythings gonna be fine, can you tell me your name? Were here to help. And I almost did that until I realized it had rained recently and were I to lie down on the highway I would ruin my best clothes, so instead I just kind of changed it into a character that pretended to choke in restaurants, and it was really the sort of coping with my fathers murder that created the story that became Choke. 03:46:38 - A04. HRN-2640 Cam C In: 03.46.38 Out: 03.47.04 Sound Bite: Clark Gregg, Chuck Palahniuk on the character Gregg Yeah, Victors kind of one of the one of those anti-hero characters uh that I fell in love with in the 70s in movies like Cuckoos Nest and Five Easy Pieces and a lot of movies like that and yet theres a distinctively kind of modern bent on it in a way that you know we havent seen sexual compulsion dealt with this honestly in any movie that I know about and we certainly havent seen it dealt with in a way thats funny. 03:47:18 - A05. HRN-2640 Cam C In: 03.47.18 Out: 03.47.33 Sound Bite: Clark Gregg, Chuck Palahniuk do people talk about the sex addiction aspect Gregg Yeah most people I know that have seen the movie feel like it is a window into a world that we really havent seen before. Im glad about that, thats certainly one of the reasons that I went so crazy for the book and Im glad that people feel that way about the movie. 03:47:36 - A06. HRN-2640 Cam C In: 03.47.36 Out: 03.48.22 Sound Bite: Clark Gregg, Chuck Palahniuk where did that sex addiction part come from Palahniuk You know I uh, my brother had joked years ago about meeting women in support groups for sexually irresponsible people and at the time it had seemed like a joke but again after my father was killed I found out he was killed after answering a personals ad, and I was really fascinated by trying to research his compulsive relationship sort of addiction and how he always had kind of a string of girlfriends and I really wanted to understand what drove him so I went to sexaholics anonymous as part of research for this book, but it did give me kind of an understanding about these things that drove my father to the circumstances that lead to his death.
