And you get to the point where you like the action, you like the mayhem, you like the possibility because you never know what youre going to find that day. I mean you can end up in the middle of a shoot out, thats happened to us, you can end up you know chased around the neighborhood thats happened to us, get in some fights, you know its an adventure thats for sure. And Im a veteran and when I got out of service I had a tough time adjusting and I think thats what I was looking for when I was rolling with my friends like that is that I really missed the camaraderie and the intensity of the military life. 10:05:21 - A02. HRN-711 In: 10.05.21 Out: 10.06.07 Sound Bite: David Ayer Exactly, it was funny when I was trying to set this up at studios where Christian saves Freddy in the school yard so we understand there friendship and to me that was insulting because I knew I could sell it as a director, If I couldnt get these guys actors of this of this caliber to be best friends on camera then I would have no business having a DGA card. So from the second there on camera together you get the relationship, you understand what there about and it works. And there amazingly comfortable with each other and I think thats what happens when youre with your friends is theres no false fronts, theres no personas you can be who you are and there very relaxed together. 10:06:21 - A03. HRN-711 In: 10.06.21 Out: 10.06.57 Sound Bite: David Ayer No cause its Christian Bale I mean you look at American Psycho, you look at the Machinist you know obviously he can do the American accent so in our case it was really about getting him very very LA specific you know making sure you get the dudes and the dogs in there. And also speaking the sort of Chicano street Spanish, he had to learn that, he spoke Spanish but it was more European style, so he worked with a voice coach, he worked with like a hommie coach, he met with military veterans, he went to the neighborhoods and met with the real people and slowly began constructing this amazing character. 10:07:06 - A04. HRN-711 In: 10.07.06 Out: 10.07.26 Sound Bite: David Ayer I mean hes the epitome of a troubled man and I think what drew him to the character and what makes the character so interesting is Jim is different personas, he wears a lot of masks and hes constantly switching masks and personas throughout the movie so in essence Christian is playing several characters, its almost like Sybil.
