- Summary: Frank Marshall/Eight Below: HRN-048 Eight Below Frank Marshall (Director) Interview What was it about the story?
- Description:09:03:12 - A01. HRN-048 In: 09.03.12 out: 09.03.58 Well I think there were a couple things and part of my producer side was interested in the challenge of how to make this movie. I love the story of the dogs and the people going together and then separating and then telling parallel stories and then coming back together. So as a story teller, telling these separate stories and telling a real dog story, how they behave like humans. Theres team work and loyalty and friendship and inventiveness of how to get through situations. And when you read a story like this you go, that could never happen . The fact that it did happen that gave me the credibility to go forward and say okay lets make up our story, but we know this has happened. Disney puts there stamp on it. 09:04:17 - A02. HRN-048 In: 09.04.17 out: 09.04.37 Ya it adds that bit of creditability where you go, oh my gosh! you know and the fact that its inspirational. This is a really inspirational and uplifting and heart warming story as well about people bonding together and helping each other out and working together to over come an impossible situation. Heart braking too 09:04:39 - A03. HRN-048 In: 09.04.39 out: 09.04.59 Ya ya.. you have to have a little bit of both. You have to have a little sadness to get the emotion. You have to establish some danger. So you under stand. Certainly in Antarctica, because the penguins, how harsh and horrible it is down there. But you are still able to survive. The penguins survive, so the dogs were able to survive. Paul walker..? 09:05:16 - A04. HRN-048 In: 09.05.16 out: 09.06.32 Well. It was interesting. I knew Paul from his fast and the furious days and I did see running scared at that time and I thought well I know that Paul walker, but is there another side to Paul walker? And when I say End of the Blue I thought, oh, theres the guy I want. Theres the really easy going charismatic kind hearted, very likable, and hes also very out doorsy. Thats what I wanted also a guy who you could believe would be down there. But also a guy you could believe hes down there avoiding things. He just wants the unconditional love of those dogs. He doesnt worry about a relationship or responsibility or anything like that. And when I met him he was so natural. He was this guy. And then we had the Bruce Greenwood character who was the opposite from the opposite world. And Bruce who played ted Kennedy was perfect to balance out these 2 guys coming together. Thrown together and having to work together. And then how their archs go to where they bother learn something. Paul sort of grows up to realize theres more to this than just that. And Bruce as well, that theres more to life than a rock. Jason biggs comedy? 09:06:38 - A05. HRN-048 In: 09.06.38 out: 09.07.21 No no.. Every movie needs a light hearted moment and what I liked about what Jason brought to the role; and I was thrilled you know I never anticipated that Jason would want to do this, but he came in and he read for the roll and he wasnt over the top. He was a natural he brings natural humor to the role. And most of the people who Ive met who are in Antarctica, are a little quirky a little exocentric. And Jason brought all f that to the role and then he became a buddy or pauls and that happened in real life as well as on the screen. Theres a lot of fun they had together in real life that translated to the movie. Which made it very believable. Did you to Antarctica to get a feel for the story? 09:07:27 - A06. HRN-048 In: 09.07.27 out: 09.07.56 I didnt have time, but I did go to Greenland which is the northern hemisphere equivalent and its a very harsh but beautiful environment and you know for me as a filmmaker the challenge was how do I make it feel like were there. The combination of this place we found in Smithers which is almost near Alaska. And then real stock footage from Antarctica. And Greenland and Norway all put together. Into what we have. Possible to film in Antarctica? 09:07:59 - A07. HRN-048 In: 09.07.59 out: 09.08.33 No. I mean the guys who made March of the Penguins did, but it was them and a camera. Them and 2 cameras and they went out and its unbelievable, but you could never tell a feature film kind of story. its impossible. We couldnt even go to Greenland. It was too expensive to go to Greenland for the whole movie cuz theres nothing there. So we found a great place in Smithers.
