- Title: The Berlin Bunkers: Secrets Of Nazi Germany
- Date: 4th August 2008
- Description:1945: With Berlin surrounded, tens of thousands of Germans hide underground in a vast network of secret bunkers and tunnels, stretching nearly sixty miles long under the Berlin streets. TODAY: A group of young archaeologists sift through historical records and talk to eyewitnesses to locate this vast underground world. They have already found many bunkers and are still looking for more. For the first time we will take many of the survivors back to the bunkers, where they cowered in fear against the oncoming Russian Army, knowing that many of them would not survive. This is the human narrative of the last days of the Thousand Year Reich,a story never told in this way on television before. Some bunkers are in virtually the same condition as they were in 1945. The archaeologists have found original bunk beds, prams, cooking utensils and paintings. Using a local theatre group who specialize in this area of German history,we will reconstruct the texture of everyday life underground, complete with authentic clothing and dramatic scenes, based on personal accounts. This was a nation in collapse. An estimated one hundred thousand Germans killed themselves after the Russians arrived. The bunkers carry their own grim reminder ÌøåÀå? lines of toilets with no curtains or walls between them. Privacy lead to suicide.
