- Title: Mandela's Daughters
- Date: 1st January 1970
- Description:The Story of South Africa's Young Girls Fighting for a Future Balancing her bag containing all her worldly possessions,13yr old Fuzeka, her little sister, and their mother slowly make their way over the uneven scrubland littered with garbage and faeces towards their new home and#8211; a small square box of hardboard precariously held together with a few nails. There is no toilet,no running water, and no electricity. But here, they will be safe. Three months ago,Fuzeka's father forced himself on her in the night. On hearing her screams, her mother,Sheila, reported her husband to the police. He was eventually taken into custody, but after two months the court released him and sent him home. Fuzeka continued to fear for her safety, especially as now her enraged and often drunken father would persistently beat her mother. After several weeks of this treatment Sheila had enough, and emboldened by her new job and improved health after months of successful ARV treatment, fled to freedom. Fuzeka's story is tragically typical of the hidden harm being done to children throughout South Africa. In the area where Fuzeka lives,Nelson Mandela Bay,a girl child is twice as likely to be sexually abused as she is to graduate from high school. In 2010 as the World Cup beckons,we enter the lives of a handful of girls born during South Africa's new dawn, and follow then through their final years of primary education. Only 1 in 4 girls in South Africa complete secondary education and#8211; will these girls be able make this vital step? Through the prism of their lives we assess exactly how far the new nation has come and how far it still has to go.
