Dad Frank is a drunk who is of no help to anyone and has now shacked up with Sheila,a kind woman,but who suffers from numerous mental health problems and their twin babies Nigel and Delia. Veronica and Kev are good friends of the Gallagher's and live next door to the family while local policemen Tony and Stan tend to turn a blind eye whenever they can to keep the families out of trouble. Veronica's mum,Carol and brother Marty,who suffers from Tourettes syndrome,often join them down the local pub,The Jockey,where Kev works and which is run by lesbian landlady Jez. Sheila's daughter,Karen works at the pub having told Jez that she is gay and now lives in the flat upstairs as well. Ian is gay but only his twin brother Lip knows,he has been seeing Kash who runs the corner shop where he works for some time. Kash's wife Yvonne found out about them but has decided to stay in the marriage and keep quiet so she can get a few more kids out of him. After beating him with a shoe and bringing up his dead mother,Neville tells Frank he is to get a job and he will be hanging around for a few weeks to keep track of him. Frank is devastated and after hiding in the Jockey for some time he takes up the offer of help from daughter Debbie who manages to fool her granddad into thinking Frank has a job as a window cleaner. Karen has got a job at the Jockey but Veronica is not happy about her hanging around her husband all day so head-butts her in the bar. Jez gives her a three week suspension which only serves to make her more angry so she goes back again,first wearing a black wig and then a false moustache and cap. Having been attacked three times Karen decides to make peace by bringing Veronica an array of alcohol,promising to give her discounts at the bar and reassuring her that she is not interested in Kev. In order to get back in Jez's good books Karen and Veronica let her catch them kissing which pleases both Jez and Kev. Neville discovers Frank has been lying about the job and tries to knock him off his ladder accusing him of killing his mother,but Neville has a heart attack and falls to the ground. Frank tells his dad what he and his mum really thought of him and leaves him for dead. Unfortunately he turns up some hours later completely recovered and they both put on a show for Sheila pretending that they are the best of friends. Finally Frank manages to get rid of his dad and they part on bad terms.
