Summary:IN THE LATE 12TH CENTURY 'CATHARS' BEGAN TO APPEAR IN THE FRENCH REGION OF LANGUEDOC, PREACHING AN ALTERNATIVE FORM OF CHRISTIANITY TO THAT OFFERED BY THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. THEY CALLED THEMSELVES THE GOOD MEN;EMBRACING POVERTY AND ABSTINENCE, THESE GNOSTIC HERETICS BELIEVED THAT THE WORLD WAS AN ALIEN ENVIROMENT FOR MAN'S SOUL. THE CHURCH OF ROME COULD NOT TOLERATE THE CATHARS' DISSENT, AND TRIED FIRST TO PERSUADE THEM THEY WERE WRONG.THEN CAME THE INQUISITION; AND FINALLY THE ALBIGENSIAN CRUSADE WHICH CRUSHED THE CATHAR REBELS WITH A MILITARY CAMPAIGN. HUNDREDS OF HERETICS WERE BURNED AT THE STAKE; AND GNOSTICISM WAS SUPPRESSED AS IN THE 3RD CENTURY.
