- Summary: Rebecca is pregnant. When Serafina (on sick-leave with "nervous debility") lets Bridget and her luggage through the door of the Battersea flat the tenants are furious. But in time, as BRIDGET listens to their problems, cooks clever little meals, they begin to wonder what life would be like without her. All except Phyllida who storms back to live with her father. Bridget finds life with these socially poised young people very agreeable and she especially enjoys the company of witty, homosexual, urbane Giles whom she is falls in love with! When Bridget confides in Mark he asks "when will this madness end?" Giles response when Bridget tells him she loves him is "Yes, I know, isn't it fun." Giles dreams of running an art gallery in California but it would take years to raise the money. Bridget decides to seize the day, shape her own happiness. She will sell the flat in Waddon and she and Giles will embark for America.
