Summary:Mark's reaction on hearing the plan is predictable, despite Bridget's assurances that she has a clear grasp of the reality of the situation. Aghast, Mark knows he must somehow prevent such an act of spectacular folly. In a last ditch attempt to avert their departure Mark meets Giles, and begins to understand what a good relationship they have - as firm a basis as any for marriage. Then Giles unexpectedly tells Mark he can't go with Bridget (the problem of his grandfather is not resolved and he hasn't the heart to leave the old man alone). But the problem is solved when Herbert dies in the night.
