CARYL CHURCHILL HAS WRITTEN A NARRATIVE WHICH EXPLORES THE EFFECT OF DEATH ON A FAMILY, AND WHICH ALSO REFLECTS THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF BACH'S OWN FUNERAL, WHICH IAN SPINK HAS CHOREOGRAPHED FOR TELEVISION. IN THE FILM, CARYL CHURCHILL'S NARRATIVE IS TOLD THROUGH THE USE OF MUSIC, TEXT, IMAGES AND MOVEMENT - SOME OF IT NATURALISTIC, SOME OF IT HEAVILY STYLISED. THE PIECE ITSELF IS STRUCTURED IN A FUGAL FORM, WITH TWO THEMES, A SERIES OF CANONS, A RESOLUTION AND A DANCED CODA.
