- Summary: In a country road a speeding car turns into a ball of fire. In a hi-tech office in London Docklands Roland Wearing hears the voice of his father who's meant to have died in a car crash 10 years earlier. Helped by girlfriend, Saskia, Roland tries to reach his father, but Nick vanishes shadowed by Armstrong. Two old hippy friends of Nick's, Dum Dum and Lulu who live in a psychedelic vanact as messengers between Nick an Roland. Roland works for an lives Hamlet-like in the home of his rich uncle Claud and his mother Maria. Claud organises a memorial service for Nick which is hilariously disrupted by Dum Dum and Lulu. The trail f or Nick lead to the Opera, of which Claud is a prominent patron. Modern story is intercut with flashbacks - Nick with baby Roland and Maria in the 60s, we follow Nick to Paris, May '68 where he meets sinister Armstrong; in '79 schoolboy Roland watches his dad taken away by Armstrong.
