- Summary: Lally, the old nurse, recalls the events at the end of the First World War which drove Stella, Joan & Natalie to leave Dominica. The children's father, Master, h as been in France fighting. His return, eagerly awaited by Madam (his wife), the children and governess Mamselle Bosquet, is not a happy event. It becomes clear he is 'damaged' psychologically. He's introspective and depressed. He writes to a Haitian drug dealer, Mr Lilipoulala, who visits him and sells him opium. The Master alternates between gloom and drugged torpor. Madam is profoundly unhappy at the condition of her husband.Meanwhile, the lives of the children continue amongst the lush landscape of the island. Stella is terrified by Lilipoulala and this fear will dominated her life.
