- Summary: Mr Lilipoulala is buried. Mamselle removes most of the drugs from his case and se cures a short supply for the Master. Joan, the middle sister, returns from England, where she is married to a Left-wing idealist, and plunges into the politics of the island, helping the cook's son, Baptiste, to organise a meeting of the starving labourers. Stella leaves the island, but never returns to the farm. Joan comes into direct conflict with the authorities. Andrew sinks back into illness - and angry because Joan has not found time to visit him, he struggles up hill paths to the house. In the orchid house they talk, but are interrupted by the arrival of a Brother from the church. Andrew falls badly ill, and is taken away by the brother, leaving Joan's white dress stained with blood.
