- Title: Hungarians Not Comrades
- Date: 22nd November 1989
- Summary: This week's referendum in Hungary will be that country's first free vote in 40 years. The referendum, on the form that Hungary's new democracy will take, will mark the culminations of a year of extraordinary changes. Hungary has been at the forefront of the momentous changes sweeping eastern Europe. But, as Dispatches shows, it may prove easier to collapse the old socialist order than to invent a new democratic structure. The events of the year are seen through the eyes of independent trade unionists, of members of the newly established Federation of Young Democrats, of Communist Party members and opposition activities in a small village far from Budapest. Hungarians are seen setting up political parties and persuading people to join them, realising there are issues which divide as well as unite the country's anti-Communist opposition. The film shows, over the course of a year, changes of mood, ideas and hopes.
