On-line computer networks like the 'Well' in California, devised by U.S. writer Stuart Brand enable dozens of people equipped with only a telephone and a personal computer to link up and communicate wit h each other on limitless subjects at any time of the day or night. Already millions of computers are connected in on-line networks in U.S. and elsewhere, but this is only the beginning of a spider's web that could in the future link up half the population of the world.
