- Title: Dispatches: Further East
- Date: 24th January 1990
- Summary: This week's Dispatches is a portrait of China in crisis. The Chinese economy is now out of control. The liberalism of the early 1980s lead to an economic boom. As the party hardliners try to regain control of the country, recession looms. I n the aftermath of Tiananmen Square, foreign tourism and investment have dried up. This Dispatches film shows the extent of Chinese economic success in recent years - particularly in Guangdong province. The consumer society that was being created is now ebbing away and the factories are now preparing for hard times. Dispatches contrasts China's new underclass with this fast fading affluence. The major effect of both the political and economic changes of recent months has been to lower morale drastically. China's problems are mounting, but having started to abandon the reforms of the last decade and being cold-shouldered by the West does the country face a chronic lack of direction when it most needs it?
