- Title: Dispatches: Licence To Kill
- Date: 6th December 1989
- Summary: On the day the Department of Transport launches its annual 'don't drink and drive' campaign, Dispatches asks whether government campaigns have been directed at the right targets. Young drivers are particularly at risk on the roads. Every year 1000 deaths and 60000 injuries are caused by accidents involving drivers under 25. One in every five road accidents involves a young driver. But the government has only just started to commission research on the ways young drivers are at risk. Overseas research shows that young drivers are at risk on the roads because they lack experience, because they are more likely to take risks, and because they take less notice of warnings about drinking. Dispatches asks Transport minister Robert Atkins MP why the government is not doing more to follow the examples of other countries to help young drivers to help themselves.
