The events of these years have been argued over by historians almost since they were over and the programme asks if the events of the Civil War and the years of Commonwealth that followed amount to a British Revolution on a par with the French or Russian Revolutions. Britain was bitterly divided by a bloody civil war and then governed for the only time in modern history as a republic. Leading historians of the period from Britain and America contribute to the programme which also includes dramatic photography of 17th century locations & sites. The programme covers the debate about the causes of the war & follows the story of the break- down between King Charles I & Parliament up to summer 1642 when the King raised his standard at Nottingham, the traditional sign for the declaration war.
