- Title: Civil War Battle
- Date: 7th May 1991
- Summary: Third in series of 6 programmes looking at the momentous events of the mid-17th century in Britain. Images of battles which took place over 300 years ago are often colourful and romantic. They disguise the harsh realities of war. The Civil Wars of the 17th century were as bitterly fought as any in succeeding generations & the human cost as high. Compared with the high technology of modern warfare, 17th century weapons & arms look primitive but the set piece battles of the war - at Edgehill, Marston Moor & Naseby - left a dreadful toll of the dead and dying. England was unprepared militarily when war broke out between King & Parliament & many soldiers were conscripts, raw & inexperienced. Civilians suffered too - major cities like York/Bristol were besieged & faced with marauding troops. This programme tells the tragic experience of those un-fortunate to be caught up in the bitterest conflict ever fought on British soil.
