- Title: Civil War Liberty
- Date: 14th May 1991
- Summary: Fourth in a series of 6 programmes looking at the momentous events of the mid- 17th century in Britain. The British Revolution of the 17th century was the 1st revolution in modern Europe. Like the revolutions which followed, it was a time of enormous upheaval. Censorship broke down & there was a flourishing of debate & radical ideas. Thousands of pamphlets rolled off the printing press, often written by radicals who previously would not have had access to print. Religious radicals challenged the church & its teachings; soldiers confronted commanders; people formed communes squatting on common land. Many joined the call to liberty democracy & religious freedom. Revolutionary demands ranged from constitutional reform to common ownership of land. Ultimately the British Revolution failed but the ideas lived on to resurface when later generations called for freedom and liberty. Evokes the spirit of the time - "the world has been turned upside down"
