In the winter of 1948/9 those leading the British Revolution confronted the problem - what to do with the old tyrant who in surviving acts as a focus for the opposition? In London, the army seized power & set up a court to try the King who was found guilty of being a "traitor, murder & a public enemy to the good people". He was executed without being allowed to deliver his prepared defence. The years of rule by a Commonwealth that followed were the only years in modern history in which Britain has being a republic. They were dominated by the personality of Oliver Cromwell who tried to disguise his military regime behind the cloak of civilian respectability. It recreates the drama of the King's trial in voice-over & follows the story of Cromwell's military rule. Public clamoured for restoration of monarchy after his death.
