- Summary: Last in the series of programmes looking at the momentous events of the mid-17th century in Britain.With restoration of Charles II in 1660 came a restoration of the old ways. The radical debate that characterised the years of civil war & Commonwealth went underground. The Church of England was restored to its old place, army brought under control of Parliament. Looked as though British Revolution had come full circle. The years of conflict left a lasting effect on British life. Religious radicals became the dissenting tradition. The hatred of standing armies has meant that the army has largely stayed out of political life Britain has never again endured the trauma of civil war & revolution & has enjoyed 3 1/2 centuries of stability since. It looks at the dramatic legacy of the civil wars on England, Scotland and Ireland and shows how crucial these events were in the shaping of modern Britain.
