- Title: 40 Something A Quiet Frenzy
- Date: 16th June 1991
- Summary: The 60's generation is approaching middle age, and it won't be easy. Most people celebrate their 40th birthday with a party - the only rite of passage from youth to middle age - but they fight against physical ageing.. exercise, cosmetic surgery.. but they can't so easily avoid the psychological traumas. This programme looks at the idea of mid-life crisis - is it real or just media hype. The stories are told of men and women, British and American, who have experienced mid-life crisis (the successful businessman who left the London rat race to pursue his hobby of barbershop singing and charity work; the single woman in New Jersey who hears the loud tick of the biological clock and puts relationships at risk as she is so desperate for a child; the athlete David Moorcroft who has to accept early professional retirement; the builder who pursued his dream, failed and feels stuck in a trap).
