To bridge the gaps between legend, myth and history the figure of Arthur needs the help and guidance of a qualified magician. Colourful patterns appear in the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi, but they do not supply the Abbot with what he needs. Out of the story of Merlin the Cyfarwydd provides Arthur with the appropriate magician. His brother, the monk, however remains faithful to the inheritance. Out of the just and mild-mannered Manawydan he composes the portrait of an authentic alternative hero. This is the story he would prefer the political world of his day to listen to. It still lives in the codex the young woman carries.
