In the first programme we follow Brother Felix from his monastery in Ulm in Southern Germany over the Alps and down to Venice - 'the mistress of the Mediterranean'. Through Brother Felix we discover the mysteries and splendour of 15th Century Venice - the seductive appeal of its many churches and Machiavellian nature of its inhabitants as Felix tries to negotiate a safe passage to Jerusalem. The is was no ordinary pilgrimage!
