- Title: Classic Motorcycles Scootermania
- Date: 17th October 1993
- Summary: "SCOOTERMANIA" - THE MODS AT BRIGHTON IN 1964 FADE AWAY INTO ITALY IN 1946. THE POST-WAR PERIOD NEEDS CHEAP TRANSPORT. THE VESPA AND LAMBRETTA ARE BUILT BY PIAGGIO AND INNOCENTI. BOTH COMPANIES TURNED THEIR PRODUCTS INTO MAJOR CULT PHENOMENA BY CAREFULLY ORCHESTRATED ADVERTISING AND PR PLANS. NEVERTHELESS, BOTH MACHINES, UNLIKE THEIR COMPETITORS, WERE STUNNING PIECES OF INTEGRAL DESIGN. BOTH WERE ALSO THE FIRST ITALIAN TWO-WHEELERS TO BE MADE BY MASS-PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES. THE COMPANIES PUSHED THE IMAGE OF YOUTH, FREEDOM AND MODERNITY IN THEIR ADVERTISING. THEY SET UP A WORLD WIDE DEALER NETWORK AND URGED SCOOTERISTS TO SET UP CLUBS UNDER THEIR CORPORATE WING. THE MODS LOVED THE SCOOTER FOR ITS STYLE AND SOON TRANSFORMED IT INTO AN ICON OF REBELLION. THE SCOOTER FADED AWAY THROUGH THE 60'S AS AFFLUENCE SPREAD DOWN THROUGH THE SOCIAL SCALE. SOON IT WAS REPLACED BY ANOTHER STYLE SYMBOL - THE MINI.
