- Title: Over The Garden Wall The Dry
- Date: 3rd June 1994
- Summary: As current trends in gardening move away from over-cultivated hothouse flowers to natural, native species, OVER THE GARDEN WALL is a brand new way of looking at the garden and problems faced by gardeners. The series looks at the varied natural conditions which Britain's native wild plants have to contend with, explains how they are adapted to deal with these conditions in their gardens. Over the course of the season OVER THE GARDEN WALL looks at the dry conditions of East Anglia, explains why the medicinal herbs cultivated by the Romans favour the Uplands near Hadrian's wall; examines the plants which favour the wet and boggy land of the Lake District and those which cling to the sides of Cheddar Gorge, and visits the Burren in Western Ireland, one of Europe's finest rock gardens. The FIRST programme in the series visits East Anglia which, at first sight, seems an unpromising place to garden. Plants in the wild and in the garden are exposed to the country's lowest rainfall and the drying effects of winds across the flat landscape. Near the coast, salt spray and sandy soils put further demands on a plant's ability to hold moisture. With increasing drought, hosepipe bans and the possible effects of global warming this programme has relevance for gardeners far beyond East Anglia.
