- Title: Over The Garden Wall The Uplands
- Date: 10th June 1994
- Summary: The Romans were Britain's first gardeners. They grew plants for flavouring, for medicinal use and for sacred offerings to their gods. Plants from the wild became domesticated and were nurtured in their formal gardens. Today, just yards from Hadrians Wall, in Chester's Walled Garden near Hexham, Kevin and Susie White grow nearly 800 different species and varieties of herbs. They hold two National Collections for the NCCPG; Kevin manages the thyme collection, Susie keeps marjoram's. They also grow a wide range of native wild flowers which have decorative or herbal use in our gardens. Some of the rarest and loveliest of our wild flowers grow in the northern Pennines. Ian Finlay, the Warden of Upper Teesdale's National Nature Reserve is our guide to the spring and early summer botanical specialties. Back in Tynedale, Kevin and Susie White show Toby Bourgein and Alice Oliver who are developing their own garden where thymes and marjoram's should be planted to grow and look their best.
