- Title: The 3000 Mile Garden
- Date: 27th January 1995
- Summary: Roger Phillips clears up the beer cans and sweet wrappers collecting behind railings in Eccleston Square. It's a miserable job in heavy February rain. A letter from his American friend and food writer Leslie Land contains Brandywine tomato seedlings. He plants them in his balcony vegetable patch. The nights are freezing but the days are getting warmer in Maine. Leslie and her partner, Bill trudge through snow to collect the rising maple sap. Forty gallons are needed to make one gallon of syrup. The job takes time. She is also planning the first outdoor meal of the year - a Maine delicacy - lobster grilled in the embers of a bonfire. Leslie stuffs them with butter, mushrooms, dill and brandy, then wraps them in foil to go on the fire. Roger turns his attention to the future of the square. Archivist John Seargeant shows him maps illustrating the development of Pimlico from London's garden patch to a maze of stucco streets and squares. Roger is augmenting Cubitt's original design for Eccleston Square by adding a path through the gardens. The quarterly meeting of the Eccleston Square Gardening Committee notes dog mess is less of a problem in the Square. Meanwhile Leslie cannot get enough natural fertiliser for her Maine garden. She takes delivery of a truck load of manure from a local store to get her plants off to a good start. The programme ends with the Camellias coming out in London. The heat effect of the buildings, vehicles and people in the city, and the wind-shelter of the tall homes and offices create an ideal micro-climate for early blooms. Roger enters them for the Royal Horticultural Show.
