- Title: The 3000 Mile Garden
- Date: 24th February 1995
- Summary: The weather turns around as autumn is recorded in the closing entries of horticulturist Roger Phillips and writer Leslie Land's letter diaries. The season yields mushrooms on the New Forest floor. Roger heads there for his annual mushroom hunt, accompanied this year by the Harrods Gourmet Club. His expert knowledge is put to the test, identifying a wide range of varieties. Following the hunt, lunch is served. Every course is from the forest floor. Leslie shares Roger's fascination for mushrooms (they met at a mushroom conference in the USA) but she searches for them alone, by the banks of a Maine river. A local fete in Maine is muddied by 11 inches of rain, but Leslie visits undaunted. Her mind is set on meeting other folk with similar food and gardening passions. Her tomato seedlings have borne fruit on the other side of the Atlantic. The brandywine species she sent Roger earlier in the year has thrived on the Eccleston Square balcony, so he harvests them to make a mozzarella, basil and tomato salad. The year closes with deteriorating weather in Maine. Leslie is preparing to leave her Maine house, for New York. Before she locks up, she prepares a pack of her special Christmas cookies for Roger to hang on his tree.
