- Summary: L'Infamy Rochet decides to take up politics, Degout is more sceptical. Lawrence Hulte (Forbes Masson) a prestigious gallery owner, comes to see Degout's studio which he mistakes for a work of art. Hulte agrees to exhibit the apparent masterpiece (floorboards and all), in his gallery. The exhibition of modernist art is a huge and controversial success and immediately causes a riot. Both the fascist's and the Bolsheviks join in and Degout's fame is assured. Minotti and Degout go to Hugo's café to celebrate and Degout is besieged by fans. The police arrive and Degout is arrested for producing obscene material and inciting a riot. In prison, he meets Rochet who has joined the fascists and is therefore branded a subversive and Helmut, a German fascist (ken Bones). In court Degout makes an impassioned speech but fails to persuade the Judge of his innocence. Degout is sentenced to death but as he is being sent down, Helmut attempts to shoot the judge, Degout steps in and is pardoned.
