The arrival of Degout's annoying brother Leon (Ian McNeice) is the last straw and Degout flees to the peace and quiet of his rural childhood home. Degout has to contend with constant attentions of his minister father (John Barron) and the butler Piere (David Schneider) who has a disease of the mind. Meanwhile in Paris, Leon is annoying the regulars at the Café with feeble pranks. Degouts patience gives out and he returns to Paris. But Leon has whipped the café regulars into a frenzy, worshipping the summer solstice and they ruin the peace at Degout's apartment. Degout throws himself out the window and finds solitude at last in the quiet calm of a hospital bed. All visitors are banned and at last Degout prepares to sketch. His pencil drops to the floor but there is no-one around to pick it up.
