- Title: The Scrimpers
- Date: 3rd October 1994
- Summary: A six-part documentary series to investigate and celebrate the ingenuity and craftiness of Britain's scrimpers. With Ray Brooks and Rik Ball. "Scrimp" is about making ends meet, but rather than being a complaint about straitened circumstances, it is a series made in praise of men and women's ingenuity. And, it records, with humour and enthusiastic understanding, the simple joy there is to be had from a good SCRIMP. Whether it's for survival or pleasure, economy or profit, 'scrimping' offers many rewards. There's ingenuity to be proud of, there are savings to be boasted of and there's moral superiority to be savoured. In this series, which aims to amuse as well as inform, 'scrimpers' from all over Britain and from all walks of life reveal their inventiveness and thriftiness, their triumphs and their disasters. The programmes are shot entirely on location in North Devon, Brighton, West Midlands, and the London suburbs. In the FIRST programme they meet Birmingham performance artist Jony Easterby who presents a Dark Country son et lumier of burning industrial junk powered by paraffin and lighter fuel. And in Northumberland they meet an 80 year-old Laura Horn, a woman who says that her constant quest for economies sometimes gets on her own nerves.
