- Title: People First: Dirty Tricks,Angry Voices
- Date: 5th December 1994
- Summary: The widely-condemned tactics of the Government in blocking the Civil Rights (Disabled Persons) Bill - which would have given disabled people full civil rights in every aspect of life - provoked a furious outcry earlier this year. Tonight's programme shows the depth of anger and outrage that disabled people continue to feel over the 'dirty tricks' that led to the parliamentary defeat. Three days before the Bill was sue to go to a third reading which could have resulted in legislation, 82 amendments were put forward by four Conservative back benchers. People First shows how the Government appeared to be behind the moves. But direct action, including protests and rallies, continues to keep the issue firmly on the political agenda. The struggle is nothing less than a battle for the human rights of six million disabled people to enjoy full citizenship, a democratic right to exercise choice and control over their lives. With its powerful combination of the parliamentary debate footage, interviews, political cartoons and songs, this film illustrates the extent of the discrimination that disabled people face in their everyday lives and reinforces the need for comprehensive anti-discriminatory legislation.
- Description:Recent success in gaining parliamentary support has encouraged disabled activists in their fight for choice and control in their lives and for proper anti-discrimination legislation.
