Launching a new product is a costly enterprise. Research suggests only 2 out of 10 new products launched will be on the shelves two years from the launch date. The widget is the latest aid to marketing beer. Up until now it has only been applied to cans of bitter because older style widgets give a good head, but produce a flat beer. Lager drinkers want pizzazz in their glass. Guinness saw a gap in the market for a lager with a new-style widget that keeps the fizz in. FOOD FILE investigates the marketing, blood, sweat and tears surrounding product launches. At the end of the day, despite all the money spent, the risk is minimal - Guinness is not dependent on the success of the product. Amanda Ursell presents her own Dishing it Up, a critique of the nutritional know how of GPs. She reveals they have virtually no training in nutrition. The importance of diet and health has not filtered through to the surgery. Too often diet is only considered when it is too late. Patients may not be advised to change their diet until they suffered a serious illness, and there is evidence many old people are chronically malnourished. Amanda also looks at the role of nutrition for pregnant mothers and in helping common complaints such as arthritis. Charles Campion's campaign to Save Our Shops continues this week with a trip to Britain's oldest greengrocer, J.Pickles in Bingley, West Yorkshire. Established since 1820, they now rely on elderly customers and are struggling to survive. This weeks World in a Stew is from the Lebanon. Off-beat cookery writer and photographer Anissa Helou demonstrates M'dardarah, a rice and lentil recipe served with various side dishes or mezze. Meanwhile, photographic inspirations comes from her collection of Barbies, Kens and Sindy dolls which demonstrate various positions from the Kamasutra!!
