Summary:As one of Nigeria's best loved authors and creator of the country's most popular soap opera, he used his fame to help bring attention to the environmental damage caused by Shell's oil operations in Ogoni land. Protests against Shell led to violent clashes between the Nigerian police and the Ogoni people. In May 1995, Saro-Wiwa was seized and charged with incitement to murder following the killing of four men at a political rally. Defying world opinion, the Nigerian authorities executed Saro Wiwa and eight of his fellow activists on 10th November 1995.
