- Summary: Detective Constable Tarun Dev wakes on a beach to find a telephone number has been scrawled on his chest and Inspector Marathe soon finds that it is the number in Dubai of a man well-known to the police. Mahmood is one of the biggest crooks operating in the city, but is also known to be a dangerous and difficult man to pin-down. Superintendent Mayberry is keen to keep Dev away from trouble and hopes to distract him with an investigation into the case of a British woman who has been found burnt to death in her car. Dev has other problems when Meena tells him that her brothers, both devout Muslims, have come to the city to return her to her father and her home in the country. Desperate not to give up her studies,Meena is also anxious not to distress her elderly father,a problem that Dev can only try to understand. Meanwhile, despite the dangers of dealing with Mahmood,Dev telephones the number in Dubai and a meeting is arranged with his operators in Bombay. He has passed the test and they are convinced that he is an addict who would do anything for smack,a junkie who would kill for the drug.
